Vocabulary Sample Question - Odd One Out

2. In the following set of words, which word is different from the others?

A. Flute.

B. Violin.

C. Cello.

D. Sitar.

E. Bass.

Answer

The correct answer is (A) -Flute.

When you first see this list, all of the answers seem to be in the same category – musical instruments. However, if you are asked to find the odd one out, you must examine the list more closely. Which instrument is different from the others? A flute is a wind instrument. All of the other answers are string instruments.

Solving tip:
Assuming that you do not know what a “sitar” is because it is a lesser-known instrument, how can you choose the correct answer? You already know that answers (B), (C), and (E) are all string instruments, and that answer (A) is a wind instrument; therefore, you may conclude that answer (D) falls into the larger category. You should mark the answer (A) as the odd one out.

*This technique is not 100% foolproof, and you may still get the answer wrong because it is possible that a sitar is not an instrument at all. However, considering time constraints, it's a valuable method to adopt.
