What is a Cappfinity Assessment?

The Cappfinity Assessment is a collection of online tests, used to assess one or more of the following abilities: numerical, verbal, and critical reasoning. In most cases, you will also receive the Situational Strengths Test which examines your ability to demonstrate good judgment in work-related situations, in a way that aligns with the organization's core values.

Cappfinity is a large test provider, that administers tests for leading employers, many of them are companies in the finance industry such as EY, HSBC, and others. The specific format of your Capp assessment may change as the tests each company uses are tailored to the needs of the employer and the relevant position.

Cappfinity Numerical Reasoning Test

In the Capp numerical reasoning test, you are presented with 12 numerical questions involving charts, tables, and graphs. The answer format changes, as some are multiple-choice questions, and others require you to type in the answer.

💡  Calculators are allowed. It is also recommended to use a pen and paper.

Cappfinity Numerical Reasoning Sample Question

You have been asked to review this year's increase in sales of selected franchise products in selected cities across Europe. Which product has the smallest range of sales increase between the cities shown in the table?

cappfinity-numerical-reasoning-test
Product A
 Product B
 Product C
 Product D
Product A and Product C
Correct Answer
Incorrect Answer

The question refers to the products (the columns) and not the cities (the rows). This could be inferred from the answers, too.

It requires looking at the range of sales increase, meaning the difference between the smallest sales increase of a product and the largest sales increase of that same product. To answer the question, you must calculate the range for each product and compare the ranges, to find the smallest range:

Product: Largest Increase – Smallest Increase = Increase Range
Product A: 89% - 79% = 10
Product B: 64% - 55% = 9
Product C: 85% - 75% = 10
Product D: 47% - 30% = 17

Product B had the smallest range of sales increase.

*This range is not a percentage in itself, but only the numerical difference between two percentages – it's unit of measurement is a percentage point (pp).

As you can see in the question above, most arithmetic calculations in Capp numerical questions are quite simple. The challenging part is to realize what you are being asked, where to find the information you need, and which of it is relevant for the calculations.

⏰  The Capp numerical reasoning test does not contain a time limit.

But- the time passed is recorded and used to calculate your test score. So, you have to ensure you get the correct answer quickly, without missing critical information.

Our Cappfinity numerical reasoning practice tests help cut down the time it takes to understand what you are looking at and to find the relevant numbers and reach the right answer.

The Cappfinity numerical reasoning test is widely used by leading employers such as EYKPMG (Both Big 4 Companies), HSBC and more.

Cappfinity Situational Strengths Test (SST)

The Capp Situational Strengths Test measures a set of values, or strengths, that your employer is looking for in potential employees. In each question, you are presented with a work-related scenario and asked to rate how likely you are to choose each potential response.

💡 Note that you cannot rate two responses in the same likelihood.

Capp Situational Strengths Practice Question

You have recently joined a big accountancy firm as an accounts trainee. You have been assigned several tasks, including vendor invoices, paying bills, and creating invoices for numerous clients. You are therefore committed to several deadlines. An experienced partner in your team, with whom you usually have lunch, approaches you. He asks you to join him at a conference next week as a representative of the company, presenting detailed information regarding the exclusive services your firm has to offer. This would be a great learning opportunity for you, but it will keep you out of the office for two whole days.

What would you do in this situation?

Please rank the responses below on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being what you are most likely to do and 5 being what you are least likely to do.

  • Skip the opportunity, as you must meet your deadlines and feel that, as a trainee, you are not yet qualified to represent the company in such a situation. Make a note to yourself to be more prepared for such an opportunity in the future.
  • Thank your partner and agree immediately to go, as this is a great opportunity. Try to move some of your deadlines and ask your fellow trainees to help you prepare for the conference.
  • Agree to go. Work extra hard during the weekend to meet all your deadlines and put in a few extra hours to prepare yourself adequately for the conference.
  • Thank your partner for his offer and try to find out more about your expected role at the conference. Then, figure out if you can meet your deadlines before the conference, and if you can, notify the partner you will join him.
  • Thank your partner and agree to go. Delegate your tasks equally among your fellow team members so you won't overload one individual person with all your tasks and ensure these will be completed in time.

The correct ranking is: 3 → 4 → 2 → 1→ 5

The presented situation requires prioritising your tasks and making an educated decision. The ideal response has to show you consider possible implications and make an informative decision demonstrating the company's values.

Let's consider each response individually:

  • Response #1This response does not indicate an in-depth consideration of possible options, but it shows you make choices based on the company's best interest, a value employers see as very positive. Since it lacks taking possible options into account, it this response should get a mid-range rating.

  • Response #2: Here, you agree immediately to your partner’s suggestion, without considering the implications. By doing so, you fail to make an informed decision. In terms of values, this response shows you take your colleague’s help as a given and put your own personal development above company deadlines and obligations. Thus, this is a negative response choice that should be rated as 4/5.

  • Response #3: This response demonstrates ambition and determination as you are willing to work extra hard to complete your obligations and prepare adequately for the conference. However, you agree to attend the conference without re-evaluating your obligations and ensuring you will be able to meet all your deadlines in time. Since ambition, determination, and high motivation to work extra hard are highly valued by employers, this should be rated as 2.

  • Response #4: In this response, you show an ability to re-evaluate your obligations and prioritise your tasks. Only then do you make an informed decision based on the information you have collected. This response displays excellent decision-making skills and conscientiousness. You not only prioritize, but you do so by taking responsibility for your previous commitments. Thus, this should be your preferred response.

  • Response #5: You agree to go, and you delegate your responsibilities to your colleagues. By doing so, you not only display a lack of consideration and prioritisation of your tasks, but also towards your work colleagues, who are now expected to complete your workload. This response lacks being considerate of your colleagues, as You don’t ask them for help; rather you delegate your tasks and expect them to complete them according to your deadlines without consideration of their responsibilities, as you prioritise personal development over organizational goals. It also shows inappropriate behavior in the organizational hierarchy as you are not in a higher position than your colleagues and should not be delegating your tasks to them. Thus, it is a very negative response choice.

Rating the responses in relation to one another:

  • Responses three and four are both good responses. Response four is better than response three, as you first ensure you can meet your deadlines, rather than agree to attend and attempt to meet your deadlines after.
  • Responses two and five are both negative responses, as you put your personal development above company deadlines and obligations. Response five is worse due to the inconsideration of work colleagues and incomprehension of position and organizational hierarchy.
  • Response one is ranked three, as this is not a bad response, but not a good one either.

Despite some values widely considered desirable by employers, No two Capp Situation Strengths Tests are the same, as each exam is tailored to the employer's set of values they expect candidates to demonstrate. TIP- to correctly prioritize potential responses we highly recommend reading about the company you are applying for and the values they promote and appreciate in their employees.

Cappfinity Critical Reasoning Test

The Capp critical reasoning test contains several sections, that assess the ability to judge arguments, evaluate evidence, draw logical conclusions, identify assumptions, and deduce conclusions.

Cappfinity Critical Reasoning Sample Question

After decades of research, effective drugs have been developed that treat over 60% of patients with depression. Individuals that suffer from common depression often respond better to the drug therapy than the minority group who suffer from ‘reversed symptom’ depression. Experimental research indicates 12 weeks of drug therapy significantly reduces several symptoms, including loss of appetite, sadness, lack of energy, anxiety, and feelings of guilt.

People who suffer from moderate depression respond better to drug therapy.

Conclusion follows
Conclusion doesn't follow
Correct Answer
Incorrect Answer

Conclusion Does Not Follow.

The text does not refer to the intensity of the depression, only to the distinction between different types of depression (typical vs. reversed symptom). Because you cannot know if this is true, the conclusion does not follow.

⏰ As in the other Capp tests, there is no time limit to this test. However, your timing is measured and used to assess your score compared to other candidates.

Cappfinity Verbal Reasoning Test

The Cappfinity verbal reasoning test includes two sections with four questions each. In one section, you are required to pick the most appropriate missing words presented in a passage. In the second section, you are asked to rank a series of follow-up sentences, depending on how well they summarise the information in the original passage.

Cappfinity Verbal Reasoning Sample Question

You read an interesting article you would like to share on Twitter. Please read the text and follow the instruction below:

Experts agree that arts and culture are an important part of the economy, but the precise relationship is complicated. The main question is does investment in the arts stimulate growth, or are the arts the product of economic development? It would seem that the case for continued arts funding is clear-cut—enjoying the arts (visiting art galleries and theatres) boosts the economy. Yet some argue that the link between arts investment and economic output is tenuous. Researchers today are exploring a different angle of this relationship. They are trying to understand how the subjective value of the arts—the 'happiness factor'—may translate into economic benefits. According to the "happiness factor" hypothesis, when a place develops a critical mass of arts and vibrancy it tends to attract talented people which, in turn, tends to raise income.

Based on the information you have been provided with, please RANK the following five statements in terms of how well they summarise the text, from 1-MOST well to 5-LEAST well.

Option A: The relationship between the arts and the economy is not as straightforward as previously thought.

Option B: The 'happiness factor' mediates the relationship between the arts and economic growth.

Option C: The arts contribute to economic growth, not the other way around.

Option D: Arts can boost the economy and vice versa.

Option E: The 'happiness factor' shows that income can rise as a result of talented people being attracted to artistic and vibrant environments.

The appropriate ratings are:

A- 1

B- 3

C- 5

D- 2

E- 4

Explanation:

Option (A) provides the best summary since it states the main point the author was trying to convey in the passage.

Option (D) is ranked next since it provides accurate information yet does not convey the complexity of the relationship between arts and economy as well as option (A) does. It is a more general summary in comparison.

Option (B) is ranked next since it relates to an important hypothesis described in the passage, but neglects to mention the equally important point raised in the first half of the passage: the complex and unclear relationship between the arts and the economy.

Option (E) is ranked next since it provides accurate information, yet only defines what the 'happiness factor' means, without referring to the main point of the whole text.

Option (C) is ranked last since it is a false statement. The passage does not assert the direction of the connection between the arts and the economy; rather it offers a few directions of research.
