CCAT Test Grade 3 Prep: CCAT Level 9 Practice Tests & Tips

What Is the CCAT-7?

The CCAT efficiently assesses academic strength and weaknesses in children and is therefore used in Canada (in place of the CogAT) for admission into Canadian gifted and talented programs. The CCAT test is designed to assess verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative abilities. The test focuses less on verbal abilities than nonverbal and quantitative abilities, making this test useful for students who do not speak English natively.

CCAT Level 9 Test Format & Content

In total, there are 170 questions on the grade 3 CCAT (level 9). As on each level of the CCAT, there are three different batteries: Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative. These batteries may be administered together or separately, depending on the needs and restrictions of the administering teacher and/or the school.

In contrast to some of the questions in lower levels, in 3^rd grade the questions are no longer read aloud, and the students need to read and figure out the question by themselves. Another major change starting from 3^rd grade is the replacement of pictures by words: verbal analogies take the place of picture analogies, verbal classifications take the place of picture classification and so on.

The verbal battery:

1. Verbal analogies: Two pairs of words are presented. The words in the first pair go together in a certain way and you need to understand how. Then, based on this way, you need to decide which word out of the answer choices goes with the word in the second pair in the exact same way. For example: match -> matchbox, letter -> ?. As you can see, a matchbox is the container for matches. Thus, your answer should be the container for letters, which is 'envelope'.
2. Sentence completion: a sentence with one or two missing words is presented, and you need to decide what they are, so that the sentence will be completed in a logical way.
3. Verbal classification: three words in bold are presented. These words belong together to a certain group or category. Your task is to find this group and then to choose the word from the answer choices that belongs to the same group.

The quantitative battery:

1. Number analogies: three pairs of numbers are presented, with a missing number in the third pair. You need to find the pattern or relationship between the numbers in the first two pairs and implement this pattern upon the third pair to find the missing number.
2. Number series: each question shows a series of numbers, and you need to figure out what is the rule or pattern that organizes the numbers. By using this rule you need to figure out the next number in the series.
3. Number puzzles: you are presented with one or more equations, and your aim is to find the number that should be in the square with the question mark.

The nonverbal battery:

1. Figure matrices: the shapes in the boxes on the top belong together in some way, and you need to choose the shape from the answer choices that goes in the same way with the shape at the bottom box.
2. Figure classification: find the rule that connects the three top figures, and then pick the answer choice that also fits this rule.
3. Paper folding: you are presented with a folded and pierced piece of paper and your goal is to choose the answer that shows this paper in an unfolded form.

On top of these questions, our 3^rd grade pack includes over 400 math enrichment questions. These questions are designed for extra practice to improve some math skills which might be helpful in the CCAT, as well as in other tests. However, you will not be tested on this type of questions on the CCAT.

How to Prepare for the CCAT 7 Grade 3

• The test is important, but it is much more important to learn calmly. Allow yourself enough time for practicing before the test, so you will not need to rush. Work in a slow and thorough way. If at first you don't succeed, don't worry, just go over the question again until you get it.
• We recommend that you try and set yourself a study plan: create a timetable and write down the hours you will allocate for studying, as well as the hours for fun and rest. Creating a plan would enable you to be well organized and you will be able to use your time effectively.
• Try to write down new ways or strategies you learn from the explanations. Writing them down can help you remember them better.
• Try to sleep at least 7 hours every night, it will enable you to stay focused!
• Proper nutrition is very important. Don't forget to eat something on the test's morning as well!

Our recommendation is to start with the batteries (verbal, quantitative, nonverbal) that will appear on the CCAT. It is recommended to practice the math enrichment questions only after you feel you are doing well on the CCAT batteries.

As a general advice, remember that many times there is more than one way to get to the correct answer. Thus, if the explanation is different than the way you used to reach the solution, don't worry, your way is good as well, but try to learn from the explanation something new.
