What is the EY Graduate Test?

The EY graduate test, also called “Technology is Changing Our World,” replicates real-life situations you may encounter during your time at EY while assessing your strengths and behavioural tendencies.

The assessment is provided by Cappfinity and comprises four sections –

  • Consumer Perspective

  • Business Perspective

  • Societal Perspective

  • Additional Questionnaire

While the first three sections (Perspectives) contain a mix of situation judgment test (SJT) questions and reading comprehension, the fourth section, the Additional questionnaire, is a personality test.

The test has no time limit and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Let’s take a closer look at each type of question!

EY Perspective Section

The first three sections of the Ernst and Young graduate assessment are divided into three perspectives that you will need to consider while working for EY –

Consumer Perspective – your approach when you encounter scenarios related to dealing with colleagues and customers.

Business Perspective – your approach when you will be asked to react to scenarios related to your business approach and creative thinking.

Societal Perspective – your approach when dealing with ethics and social norms behaviours.

All three sections contain situational judgment questions (SJT) combined with reading comprehension questions. While the SJT questions' goal is to check your suitability to EY’s core values, the reading comprehension questions' goal is to measure your ability to integrate information from various sources and draw conclusions based on that information.

You will be given various articles and videos to review, followed by multiple-choice questions and ranking questions.

The perspective sections have 12 questions overall. There is no time limit.

Let’s see example questions!

  • EY SJT Sample Question

Read the following text before answering the question.

You are currently working on an app project. The app features are being progressively enhanced during the development phase. You have discovered a new attribute that you think should be added, and you are giving a persuasive presentation to the rest of your team. While you are doing this, some of the team's more experienced members continue to interrupt you with questions and queries, while others opt out of the conversation during the meeting.

What do you do?

Please RANK the responses from 1-5, with 1 being what you would most likely do and 5 being what you would least likely do:

Note: On the actual test, the questions will be in a drag-and-drop format.

EY Graduates Test Practice Question 1
Answer & Explanation

Option A avoids engaging the interruptions in a fashion that still allows the primary messages to remain clear. Clear communication is the focus. (No 1)

Option B demonstrates a pragmatic and calm approach to the interruptions and ensures everyone gets to share their opinion. (No 2)

Option E involves moving efficiently through all the questions in a fashion likely to engage participants but may not be the clearest possible communication of the material. (No 3)

Option D involves recording questions in writing as an alternative to expressing them verbally and involves thinking outside of the box to engage team members. (No 4)

Option C involves ignoring the interrupters who are senior colleagues, which is likely to deteriorate the group dynamic even further and perhaps cause further reputation problems down the track. (No 5)

Situational judgment questions comprise subtests 1,2, and 5 (Creating a New Team, Working with Others, and Completing the Project Delivery, respectively). They assess you based on the six EY Core Values.

Note that some values assessment questions, mainly in subtest 5 (Completing the Project Delivery) are structured as personality profiling questions.

The correct order is A, B, E, D, C.

💡 Tip: Solve this question after memorizing EY values.

Included in our PrePack is an interactive Situational Judgment Test (SJT) guide that offers a comprehensive explanation of how to effectively respond to various scenarios specific to the position you have applied for.

  • EY Reading Comprehension Sample Question

Read the following text before answering the question.

A hybrid model interview is an innovative approach that combines elements of both in-person and virtual interviews. It allows candidates and interviewers to interact face-to-face while leveraging the convenience and flexibility of virtual platforms. In a hybrid model interview, some participants may be physically present in a designated location, while others join remotely through video conferencing tools. This format enables organisations to assess candidates’ communication skills, professionalism, and cultural fit while accommodating geographical constraints and promoting inclusivity. The hybrid model interview offers a unique blend of personal interaction and technological convenience, making it a valuable method in today's evolving work landscape.

Please rank the options below, with 1 being the statement that you are MOST confident is true and 4 is the statement that you are LEAST confident is true:

The hybrid model interview is exclusively conducted in a physical location with no remote participation option.

Participants in a hybrid model interview may join remotely through video conferencing tools.

The hybrid model interview combines elements of both in-person and virtual interviews.

The hybrid model interview enables organisations to assess candidates' communication skills, professionalism, and cultural fit.

Answer & Explanation

The correct answer is:

1. The hybrid model interview combines elements of both in-person and virtual interviews.
This statement is ranked 1 because it directly aligns with the definition of a hybrid model interview mentioned in the paragraph. It states that the interview format incorporates elements of both in-person and virtual interviews, reflecting the essence of a hybrid approach.

2. Participants in a hybrid model interview may join remotely through video conferencing tools.
This statement is ranked 2 because it is consistent with the information provided in the paragraph. It mentions that in a hybrid model interview, some participants can join remotely through video conferencing tools, indicating that virtual participation is a possibility.

3. The hybrid model interview enables organisations to assess candidates' communication skills, professionalism, and cultural fit.
This statement is ranked 3 as it reflects the purpose and benefits of a hybrid model interview mentioned in the paragraph. It states that the interview format allows organisations to evaluate candidates' communication skills, professionalism, and cultural fit, which are common objectives of many interviews.

4. The hybrid model interview is exclusively conducted in a physical location with no remote participation option.
This statement is ranked 4 because it contradicts the information provided in the paragraph. The paragraph clearly states that in a hybrid model interview, some participants may join remotely, indicating that remote participation is indeed an option. Therefore, this statement is the least confident choice as it does not align with the hybrid nature of the interview format.

💡 Tip: Since there is no time limit, you can take your time to understand each statement and its implications thoroughly. Pay attention to any keywords or phrases that may impact your confidence in their accuracy.

EY Personality Test

The fourth and final stage of the EY assessment is a personality test, referred to as an Additional Questionnaire. This personality test aims to get to know you and your preferences and assess how you deal with different aspects of working in EY, such as commitment and facing changes.

You will be presented with sets of statements regarding your work-related tendencies and preferences.

You will need to indicate on a scale where your preference lies for each of the statements.

You will have to address 6 sets of statements. There is no time limit.

Let’s see how it looks!

  • EY Personality Test Sample Question

Please indicate your natural preference for the following statement by choosing a number on the scale.

When something comes up and you realize that you wouldn't be able to complete a task, you usually...

Upset you haven't completed it

Understand it is part of life

Answer & Explanation

This question is designed to test your response to failure. With both acceptance and disappointment, it is not recommended to be on the extreme side of the scale. Response “1” would make it seem as if you worry too much about your mistakes, and response “8” would make it seem as if you are not reflecting on them at all.

Left option (Upset you haven't completed it): This response focuses on what was already done and cannot be changed. It does show you care about your work, but it is not benefiting the current situation.

Right option (Understand it is part of life): A professional and mature response to failure would be accepting that what was done cannot be changed, and mistakes happen sometimes. It shows you can take things in proportion and not get stuck on your previous failure.

The recommended range is 5-7.

💡 Tip: Ensure you have a clear understanding of the key competencies, skills, qualities, and values that are sought after for the specific role you are applying for. This will help you align your responses with the desired traits.

With our PrePack, you will receive a personality questionnaire simulating the real EY assessment questions and a detailed explanation of how to best rank each of the statements while reflecting your true personality!

Ernst & Young Core Values

One of the most important attributes for success in the Ernst & Young assessment is to know EY's core values by heart and keep them while answering behavioural questions.

The six core values of Ernst & Young are:

  • Adaptability, flexibility, embracing changes, and constantly learning to improve.

  • Innovation and creativity. EY is looking for people who are rigorous and start-up
    minded.

  • Curiosity. EY's employees are purpose-driven and can ask better questions to seek better answers.

Collaboration. Being inclusive and able to work in an international team.

  • Growth orientation. It is central to EY to be able to work efficiently, using critical thinking and judgment skills. These will help EY be aligned with the current trends.

  • Responsibility. Take responsibility and see the implications of your decisions.

Although the core values themselves are pretty simple and straightforward, showing EY that you follow them in a natural, unpretentious way is much harder.

That is why it is crucial to prepare for the value assessment questions with the same effort and mindset you prepare for the SJT and reading comprehension ones.
